Estimates of the Intake and Digestion of Nitrogen by Sheep Grazing a Mediterranean Pasture as It Matures and Senesces

چکیده
The level of production by sheep that graze a Mediterranean pasture as it matures and senesces depends on diet selection. By estimatin, 0 diet selection under these conditions using 2 methods, we predict that the intake of nitrogen (N) and amount of N apparently digested (ADN) decreases as the pasture matures and senesces, but that it decreases at a slower rate than the decline in pasture N content and digestibility. A consequence of this diet selection is that wool growth did not decline concurrently with pasture quality. There was a lag between the decline in the predicted amount of ADN and the decline in wool growth; wool growth began to decline about 3 weeks after the onset of senescence.

Sward Factors Influence on Pasture Dry Matter Intake of Grazing Dairy Cows: A Review
Successful pasture-based milk production systems pivot on balancing dairy cows’ feed requirements with seasonal and annual fluctuations in pasture production. In order to maximise cow production from grazing dairy systems, it is necessary to reach an efficient utilization of grazed grass for feeding cows and the development of appropriate grazing management systems designed to maximize daily pa...
متن کاملThe Estimation of Pasture Intake by the Grazing Sheep
The few estimates in the literature of the quantity of food eaten by the grazing sheep have involved calculations based on some component of the faeces. ’ The “apparent digestibility” of this component was first calculated with sheep fed on known amounts of cut pasture. Faeces were then collected from grazing sheep and the amount of the particular component in the faeces was used to predict the...
متن کاملVariation in absorption and excretion of calcium in grazing sheep in a semi-arid grazing ranch, Punjab, Pakistan
The calcium status of lactating, non-lactating, and male sheep on farm in southwestern Punjab, Pakistan was studied. Pasture and animal were sampled at the end of the first month of summer and winter. All samplings were carried out fortnightly. A mineral supplement was available to all animals throughout the year. Plasma calcium in all animals was not affected by the physiologic state and gende...

Eight beef steers fitted with esophageal (four steers/pasture) and 12 beef calves fitted ruminal and duodenal (six calves/pasture; beginning BW = 267 +/- 6 kg) cannulas grazed either midgrass prairie rangeland (excellent range condition; MIDGRASS) or plains bluestem (Bothriochloa ischaemum var. Plains) pasture (BLUESTEM) during mid-May, late June, mid-August, and mid-October of 1990 and 1991 in...
متن کاملDigestion of Protein. in the Intestines of the Sheep
Studies have been made of the digestion of nitrogen (N) and of organic matter (OM) in sheep offered thirteen gramineous roughages of widely differing nutritive value. It was concluded that the true digestibility of crude protein in the intestines ranged from 74 to 82% (mean 78%). These estimates were based on observations that, while metabolic faecal N (MFN) was equal to 0.4 g/100 g OM intake, ...
